The opportunities to be educated in music here in Örnsköldsvik are good. We also have many local bands who exercise their favorite hobby in different locals and some have even produced a CD for the enviroment...
If you want to educate yourself in music you can choose to go to the Arts programme with the branch, music. You can only find the Arts programme at the Nolaschool, which is one of our three upper secondary schools in Ö-vik. The arts programme started in 1993 and to be accepted you had to do a test so they could decide if you're good enough. All that has been taken away for the next year, now you send in your grades from the upper level of compulsory school. When you're in the arts programme the first year you choose a main instrument, then when you start your second year you choose another one. You can pick almost any instument you like. If you are good at singing or being in a choir, you can count that as an instrument as well. There are different teachers for every direction who specialize on "their subject". A part from the subjects music and drama and so on, you also have regular lessons. Your choice (music for instance) takes a lot of time, not only in school, you also have to sacrifice parts of your sparetime. 55% is used to have regular subjekts and 45% goes to the chosen direction, this means that they are studying music, about ten hours a week. The community of Ö-vik also have a so called music school, for all ages. There you can lern an instrument from the very beginning or if you have quit playing before, maybe take up playing again. This school is a good beginning if you have your thoughts on choosing the arts programme music branch. Is there any place for young aspiring musicians? Two years ago a project started to help the young aspiring musicians here in Örnsköldsvik. With all the bands' help they started to build four rooms for the bands to play in. Right now there arec about twelve bands playing there , I, Mattias play with one of those bands. You have to pay a rent if you want to play there , there is also a waiting list of bands that want to get in.

The four rooms are built in a basement of a library a bit out of town. You might think that the visitors of the library will get disturbed when they start playing , but the rooms are soundproof. The music that is played there is mostly hardrock , but there are also some bands that play pop music. In each room there are three bands , and those three bands decide which day they will rehearse on. This place has really helped to find the hidden musical talents in Örnsköldsvik.

"A planet in a can"
In Örnsköldsvik we have something called "Studie främjandet" and they decided to make a CD. They call it "En planet i en burk" or in English "A planet in a can". It is about our enviroment. I've decided to talk to someone who has been recording a song on the CD. In the band Evil Snigles there are four members: (Me) Kristian Lindtröm, plays the guitar. Johannes Forsberg, also plays the guitar. Daniel Bylund, on drums. And Tomas Köhn takes care of the bass and vocals.
Evil Snigles are playing a song called "En snigels synvinkel", or in English "A Snails view". It's a fast and heavy song with lyrics about a snail. The members in Evil Snigles don't see any future in their music, it's their hobby, just for fun. A CD is good for all bands, it gives them publicity. Evil Snigles is known in many part of the country thanks to the CD. On this CD, "A planet in a can" the musics tyles are very different and most of the bands did this CD for fun. Per Gessle from Roxette was in Örnsköldsvik last summer. Per Gessle, well known from the world-famous band Roxette, came to Örnsköldsvik last summer playing with Gyllene Tider. Gyllene Tider is (was) the band Per started his carrier with back in '78. He and his friends teamed up once again, and broke all the audience records there was in Swedish summertouring ever. The band got two Swedish grammies, and a price for best song in Sweden '96 by the leading Newspaper. Gå & Fiska! (Go Fishing) was the nr1 summer hit in Sweden ´'96, and almost everyone could sing the text of the song. Örnsköldsvik is good at getting famous artists to play here during the summer, but Gyllene Tider did the greatest concert of them all, we think.
