Bruce LeeThe man, the myth, The Mongoloid Although it has been said that Bruce was confident in his abilities, he was never seen to boast about his muscular body or incredible speed. Bruce’s body was built perfectly, he had muscles on top of muscles, yet managed to retain his lightning speed and the finesse of a ballet dancer. It was no easy task for Bruce to achieve the ‘perfect body’ it took hours upon hours of endless training and determination. He was quoted to being ‘like a small kid who would never tire’. He would spend up to four hours at a time in his garage, without a break, training with the equipment, which had been built by his students to his specifications. Although Bruce was a small man around 5’7 and 120 pounds, he had a voracious appetite. Bruce took a daily amount of vitamin pills and supplements to help increase his metabolism and physical stature. He prided himself on being healthy and physically unique. He wanted to be the best he could possibly be and pushed him to the limit every time he trained. Every training session something was gained, a new technique learned, another muscle developed or an emptiness filled. To Bruce training was a full time job. Even when sitting with his family to watch a movie he would be in constant motion, sit ups, press-ups, anything, which would improve his body. Time spent not doing anything to Bruce meant time wasted, time that could be used to improve his physique or psychological vantages. Bruce’s time was always filled. Bruce was a very philosophical character who prided himself on being able to analysis anything within a matter of seconds, Bruce was able to understand the moralities of martial arts and the theories surrounding them. He could understand why he did what he did and see whether or not it was to his advantage or not. Bruce used this ability to his advantage and along with his outstanding knowledge of fighting skills founded his own martial art ‘jeet kune do’ meaning the way of the intercepting fist. His martial art involved taking the best parts from every other fighting orientated sport from kickboxing to karate, it was all there but only the best parts. It was this discovery that gave Bruce his big break, he became the worlds most influential and greatest martial artist if all time, starring in several films and making his name in Hollywood, his dream had became reality and his life long ambition fulfilled. Bruce’s life came to a tragic end with his death in 1973, it shocked the nation that a man of such physical being could die at such an early age, a man who trained all his life to become the unique physical specimen he was, could be killed by taking an asprin?. There are so many theories surrounding his death you choose. I will leave you with a quote once delivered by Bruce Lee:
"If I said that I was a great martial artist then you would think of me as big headed" " Where as if I said I was a not so great martial artist, then you would know I was lying". Lets not remember how he died, but remember how he lived.
