POP AND ROCK IN ITALY

While in England, among young people, boy-bands are famous, Italy answers with less commercial but more valuable bands.

Giving a look at international music panorama, it’s easy to note how new teen-ager bands arose every year from aboard.

But in Italy what happens? The boy-bands fenomena is even now influenced by English culture. We have just imported those bands without adapting them to the system, like "Paola e Chiara", who are oriented to a commercial and swinging pop. But in the last few years, bands "made in Italy" have tryed to show something more serious.

With this in mind, bands like "Lunapop", Piero Pelù, Carmen Consoli, Jovanotti, took high position in Italian charts.

LUNAPOP

Lunapop are:

Cesare Cremonini (voice – 19 years old)

Alessandro "Lillo" De Simone (drums – 18 years old)

Nicola "Ballo" Balestri (bass – 18 years old)

Gabriele Galassi (guitar – 18 years old)

Michele Giuliani (guitar and keyboards)

for a total age of only 90 years old!

They all are Bolognesi (from Bologna). Their first performance was in summer ’99 with "50 Special", that had an incredible success and reached the top of the charts. We can say the same about "Qualcosa di grande", the single that backward their first album.

JOVANOTTI

Lorenzo Jovanotti’s band, who is still working with Jovanotti’s artistic project, played on this record too:

Saturnino (bass)

Pier Foschi (drums)

Michele Centoze ( guitar, keyboards, arrangements, editing, pro tools 24 and co-production).

Lorenzo’s new album has come out at last (Capo Horn, Polygram Italia 1999).

The album starts with the single hit "Per te" written for Jovanotti’s daughter Teresa, who was born last December.

In the album intuition and tecnology of the end of the century are combined together with arrangements and sounds between nowadays and 70s.

The result is a balanced mix of relaxing songs and more lively sounds (funky or a sort of technosba).

As for lyrics, Jovanotti confirms his dearest style and topics: humanitarian philanthtopism, equality and tolerance among the different peoples of the world, cosmopolitism, a touch of rebellion and of course love.

Each song indicates date and place which inspired its composition.

CARMEN CONSOLI

Carmen Consoli was born in Catania in 1974. She has been playing electronic guitar since when she was very young and when she was 14 she entered in a rock-blues group. Then she went to Rome where she went on playing and writing songs. After this festival she made a big tournè in the main Italian cities. In 1997 she came back to Sanremo with "Confusa e felice", the song that gave the title of her second album. After a year and half she made her third album "Mediamente isterica" and on February 2000 she came back again to Sanremo with "Bianco e nero" from her latest album "Stato di necessità".

PIERO PELU’

Piero Pelù was born in 1962 but his artistic life started with Litfiba in 1982, a group which is vocalist, when they took part of "First Italian Rock Festival" and they won it. In 1985 he started the production of the big success of this band: the first album is "Desaparecido", the second is "17 re" in 1986 and the third is "3" in 1988. The 1987 was the year of the first live-album "Aprite i vostri occhi". In the 1990, with the album "Pirata", their fans increased but in 1991 with "El Diablo" that gave to Litfiba the confirmation of the estimate. Then they made a European tour and other four albums: "Terremoto" (1993), "Spirito" and "Lancio Drom" (1995) and "Mondi sommersi" (1997).

The 1999 he started with "Infinito" that will conquer the first place in hit-parade. From 1° July 1999 Piero’s story went on without Litfiba because he decided to become a soloist singer.
