Pilot whales

Whales have a highly developed nervous system, they are extremely sensitive, sociably animals. They have an intense capacity to suffer distress, horror and pain.

Each year, the Faeroes kill approximately over 1500 pilot whales.

Whole families of whales - including pregnant mothers, youngsters and foetuses - are butchered by the islanders, in the most barbaric way imaginable. The whales die slow painful deaths, screaming in agony.

Islanders in motorboats first drive the whales into a bay. The chase may often take several hours. The exhausted, scared and confused whales are then driven into a bay lined with shallow water. This is the mindless slaughter begins. The islanders repeatedly hammer large angular metal gaffs into the living flesh of each whale. A huge knife is then used to sever through the blubber and flesh until it reaches the spinal column. Eventually after several minutes the main blood vessels are severed. The end result is a blood stained bay filled with the dying bodies.

The Faeroes believe this to be a joyous occasion and celebrate the event by holding a carnival. Children are often allowed to miss school to comer and watch the joyous occasion by running amongst the blood filled sea.

My views are clear on such a subject and in no way can this be justified, this is a barbaric and abusive act of power and respect for another race.

Can such a barbaric act be ethically justified, or is it merely an act of sheer ignorance for life and therefore should have no place among society?
