Years Sweden remembers from the winter Olympics.

The winter Olympics is a lovely entertainment especially for us Swedes. And we will never forget the Swedish heroes who have fought for the Olympic medals. We will always remember names like Ingemar Stenmark and Peter Forsberg and they are just two of them who have succeeded.

1980 in Lake Placid was a year when Ingemar Stenmark showed the world that he was the king in slalom. The first day of the winter Olympics Stenmark competed in giant slalom. After the first run he was in a second place 0,32 sec after the leader Wenzel, and now he was forced to give his best. The second lap was the day after and Stenmark outclassed the other
competitors. Three days later it was time for GB-slalom and Stenmark was of course the big favourite. When everyone had finished the first run Ingemar was only in the fourth place. When the last competitor had made his second run Stenmark had to give all in his last run. Once again he showed who the worthy winner was, but it didn’t go to history just only because of his medals in winter Olympics; He is most remembered from his 86 World-Cup victories. Not only Ingemar Stenmark took gold medals this year, also Tomas Wassberg in skiing 15km. The ice hockey tournament this year became a world sensation when USA won the gold medal with a team of collegestudents, while the Swedish ice-hockey team had to be satisfied with a bronze medal.

1984. The Game were held in Sarajevo and Sweden made it’s best winter-Olympics since 1948 in Moritz. And all because of a strong skiing team and Tomas Gustavsson in skating. The new big Swedish hope, Gunde Svahn only 22 years became Sweden’s youngest Olympic medallist through time. He won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze in his time. A skiing duel that the Swedish people remember from this year was in the five mile competition. Gunde started in a high tempo, but Tomas Wassberg surprised and won with 4,9 seconds. So both the gold and the silver went to Sweden.
1992 in the French Albertville the medal chances for Sweden were less because Sweden’s international team of skiing had changed generation. This year was not a bad Olympic for Sweden after all. A young girl, Pernilla Wiberg, made history in Sweden when she became the first Swedish woman to take an alpine medal. Half of the Swedish medal collection was won by the ski shooters. Sweden also came third in 10km skiing and took the bronze.

1994. This year IOK decides to separate the winter- and summer-Olympics. So the 17:th winter games takes place only 2 years after the Albertville-Olympics. Sweden takes 2 gold medals and a silver medal this year. The silver was won by Marie Lindgren in freestyle. Pernilla took the gold in the alpine combination. She was also close to take a third place in super G. The moment that the Swedish people carry on their memory from this year has been considered
being one of the greatest hockey finals. Sweden met Canada in the hockey final. And the Swedes defeated the Canadians in a sudden death and penalty shoot-out. Who doesn’t remember Peter Forsberg when he, with his cool penalty shoot, took Sweden to a gold medal.
