Drugs in Örnsköldsvik

Lately the police have been investigating a big narcoticsring here in Örnsköldsvik. The local newspaper has written something new about it almost every day. It is the biggest local ever with about 20 youngsters in the ages 20-25 involved. They are both boys and girls and they have all bought and used the drugs. Some of them have also sold it to others.
The leading characters, a man and a woman, have used drugs although they have an 8 month old baby. The man started to smoke hash in the 9th grade and when he was 15 years old he was placed in a reformschool. Last autumn he got an inheritance of 50 000 Swedish crowns, but he and his girlfriend, the woman in question, used all the money on drugs. When the abuse was at its worst they used 2 gram heroin every day and that mean a cost of 10 000 Swedish crowns a week. The most of the money they got from selling drugs to others.

When the police questioned the man he didn’t want to tell them anything about the other persons involved because he was afraid that they would want to take revenge on him. The drugs have been bought from the Balkan Peninsula and taken in via Denmark, Germany and Poland to Malmö where some of the youngsters from Örnsköldsvik have bought it. All the involved have one thing in common: they have all used drugs for a long time and some of them have previous people convictions. It seems that they all will get severe punishments.

Drughabits among Swedish students
The number of students that had tried drugs sometime reduced very much during the 1970’s and the 1980’s. In 1989 only 3 % had tried drugs but after that the numbers increased successively. In 1999 9 % of the boys and 7 % of the girls had tried drugs and most of them had tried cannabis. As the share of students that have used drugs increases, so does the share of students who say that they have had the chance to try. During the 1990’s the using of hash and marijuana has also increased among Swedish students.

What drughabits do the students at Parkskolan have?
According to an investigation at Parkskolan made with 100 boys and girls in different ages, about 7% of both the boys and the girls had tried drugs at some opportunity. All the girls that had tried drugs had tried to smoke hasch, but the boys had, except for hasch, also tried ecstasy, marijuana and amphetamine. None of the girls regretted having tried drugs but 50 % of the boys did. Of all the persons who hadn’t tried drugs 85 % wouldn’t want to try it and 72% had seen someone who had used drugs or seemed suspiciously high.
