Regent House School in Newtownards, Northern Ireland participates in European Studies Senior Programme in the same group as Parkskolan, Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. Some students have sent their opinions about three questions: 1. Five ways in which we are (nationality) 2 . Five ways which we are Europeans 3. Five goals for the future of Europe 5 ways in which we are British/Irish The people of Britain, in particularly the English, are renowned for being stereotypically reserved. In some ways our behaviour and reactions to situations display this caracteristic. Eg. at the BIG events in our lives (christenings, weddings, funerals) our emotional response is usually muted and restricted to a few tears. We use Brittish currency - the pound and enjoy typically Brittish/Irish "cuisine" eg. Bangers and mash or an Ulster fry-up. We are British in terms of the law of the land by which we abide, education system, and in events which involve the monarchy eg. the Queen´s Golden Jubilee. Also smaller things such as our Patron Saint day (St. Patrick), the singing of our National Anthem and the country´s flags that are flown. 5 ways in which we are European We sport the European sense of fashion as designs filter into our own high street stores. Our involvement in the EU (European Union) and the possible integration of euros into our monetary system. We enjoy Europeen food and drink at restaurants and endure a similar climate to much of Europe and time-zones vary only slightly compared to the differences between us and the other continents. Finally there is the accepted teaching of modern languages in schools, our own offering, French, German and Spanish. 5 goals for the future of the EU Increased effort to obtain peace in all countries and peaceful relations between nations. Also a cleaner environment cutting down on our use of pollutants and fossil fuels. An equality in economices would also be valued to ensure fair trading and an equality in cultures with tolerance and respect between those of opposing beliefs or societies.
