EUROMUSIC
From January the 1st, with the introduction of the Euro we entered in
the Monetary Union; it has
nourished in us a strong sense of united Europe. But it isn’t only
the question of currency: that shares us further to other European
Country is the music. It represents
a characteristic that sensitively joins us for genres, styles, new revelations
and glorious returns. All that passes through Europe reaches immediately Italy
as other Countries. Naturally whole Europe has a big dependence by American
marketplace. I want to start from
recent events. A month ago it came out the latest album by Celine Dion: “A new
day has come”.

In only a week it has already succeeded to sell 600.000 copies and it is
already spreading both in Europe (where it is at the top ) and
in Italy and United Kingdom (respectively the 2nd and the 1st).
The latest other events “travelled” in Europe are: the blonde all-energy,
Anastacia, with “Freak of Nature” her second album; Shakira, the new queen
of pop, Columbian of Lebanese origin, revelation of the year with her album
“Laundry Service”, present in all the world charts; the Linkin Park, new
American rock group composer of “Hybrid Theory”; the Canadian Alanis
Morissette “Under rug swept” present with success in whole Europe. I
couldn’t forget to mention the American Staind, Nickelback and P.O.D.,
creators of a new rock groups, the “nu-metal”, very valued by European
listener such as the selling ratioes of their new albums demonstrate too here.
In short, such already mentioned European record market depends largerly
by the USA and, only subsequently by United Kingdom; emblematic cases were
the albums by English Spice Girls, phenomenon of tardy nineties with
their girl-power, the pubblication of “Ones”, tribute to the Beatles, came
out in 2000 and absolute protagonist of sales; the collection of last year of
the everlasting Madonna until the latest “Echoes”, anthology of colossal
successes of the mythical Pink Floyd (English historical group) came out at
Christmas of last year and became queen of sales of that period in all the
world, particularly here in Italy.
And
for us?
Moreover
to the fact we have to subordinate
to American and Anglo-Saxon market, an other regret consists in the fact to produce music that, unfortunately,
results less valued both in Europe and in the rest of the world. Fortunately
some home artist, such as Alexia, Paola & Chiara, Laura Pausini, Zucchero,
Andrea Bocelli, Elisa and Eiffel 65 seek, with tours and promotions, to point to
foreign market, getting poor successes yet. It is really that our music
various and rich of several genres and sonorous flow…
We
hope, in a near future, to affirm in whole Europe to make up that Anglo-American
great power.
What
do you think about music in Europe?
Is
there in Sweden this strong dependence too?
