The celebration of the lizard

The beginning of a legend

When you talk about the Doors, it’s inevitable connected with the image of Jim Morrison, enigmatic leader of the band.

James Douglas Morrison (this is his complete name) was born in Melbourne on 18 December 1943. in February on 1964 he entered at the institute of dramatic art of UCLA, the university of California.

The story starts on the beach of Venice, with the meeting between Jim and Ray Manzarek. They talk about rock’n roll, Jim tells  Ray that he has written some poems, and he sings one to Ray. He is enchanted. They decided to form a band and “to earn a million Dollars”.

The name of the band is decided immediately: the Doors, that derive from a phrase by William Blake: “there are things known and things unknown, in between there are doors”.

With the two joined John Densmore and Robby Krieger, the band is complete. In 1966 they start to perform in the clubs of Los Angeles. After a long mess-tin, and after having risked capitulating, because dismissed by a lot of clubs, they had a contract by Elektra.

In January 1967 they published “The Doors”, their first album, that with “sgt. Pepper’s” by Beatles, will be the most sold album of the year, with the big approval by the critics, too. Now the band is affirmed. After “The Doors”, are published 5 albums.

Jim like poet

We don’t have to forget that the true desire of Jim wasn’t to be a rock star, but to be a poet. He writes poems since he was an adolescent. Some of these poems have been elaborated for the texts of the first two albums. No one else could mix poem and music like he did. He published a book of poems, with the name of James Douglas Morrison, to separate the image of Jim, the rock star, to the image of James Douglas, the poet.

As I look back

Over my life

I am struck by post

Cards

Ruined snap shots

Faded posters

Of a time, I can’t recall

The death of a rock star

We’re in 1971. Jim and his wife Pamela moved to Paris. Jim has got some ideas for a film had he want to escape from the external pressure. But he will find the death. Pamela finds Jim in the bath of his home on 3 July 1971. the causes of the death aren’t clear: the official version talk about infarct, but an autopsy on the corpse has never been done, and he has been buried quickly in the cemetery of Pere’ Lachalse, the “artists cemetery”, in the city he loved.

How grow a myth

ft" hspace="12" Today, 30 years after Jim’s death, his history is legend. Doors music is immortal, because isn’t tied with those years. You don’t have to forget that in the beaches of Los Angeles Hippies groups grew. But in the same time, he dressed in black and sang about the fears of the man. His dead, too, contributed to the myth. The only certain thing is that he has left us a big heredity: his thoughts and his music, that continue make all generation to  dream.

Their most famous song: light my fire

You know that it would be untrue,

You know that I would be a liar,

If I was to say to you,

Girl, we couldn’t give much higher.

Come on baby light my fire,

Come on baby light my fire,

Try to set the night on fire.

The time to hesitate is through

No time to wallow in the mire

Try now we can only lose

And our love become a funeral pyre.

Come on baby light my fire,

Come on baby light my fire,

Try to set the night on fire.
