The Environment - Our Future

The environment is one of the most important things in the world. If the nature doesn't feel good we can't feel good either. That's why it's so important that we take care of the nature and try to protect it as good as possible. Maybe you have heard about Agenda 21, a project that's runned by EU and used by all EU members. We have checked how it is at our school, Parkskolan. They try to follow the "rules" in Agenda 21, but it's not always so easy, it takes a lot of time and it's pretty expensive. Often money is valued higher than the environment.

The School Kitchen

Here in the kitchen the staff is aware about the fact that Agenda 21 exists and what it stands for. They try to follow it as good as they can, and many things they do very well to protect the environment. For example they don’t use disposables, they serve milk and butter in big packings and they give the food that’s left over to pigs. But some things they can do better. They can stop being so wasteful with the water and the paper-tissues because they don’t necessarily need to use that much. They can also stop serving the food they serve now and start serving food produced in an environmentally friendly way instead.

The Cafeteria

In our cafeteria they are very aware of the environment. Small things like sweets without paper are used and small packings and articles in plastic are seldom bought. Glass and plastic ( pet ) bottles are recycled just like paper and cardboard. The students must also have a big responsibility for the recycling, so it can work as good as possible. Have you bought a bottle of Coca-Cola, you must return the empty one to the cafeteria, so they can leave it to recycling. They have also changed the plastic mugs into real china and the knives, forks and spoons are of stainless steel, not in plastic. This isn't just good for the environment, it also gives a better impression of the cafeteria.

The Chemistry Hall

At our school the chemistry teachers are concerned about the environment, and they do all they can to protect it. At the laboratory experiments they always use as little chemicals as possible. That makes less rubbish and causes less damage on the nature. All dangerous chemicals that are left after a laboratory experiment is kept in a safe, well-protected bottle until the bottle is sent to a special place called SEKAB where they know how to handle the chemicals. The chemicals are locked up in a special room, and it's only the chemistry teachers that have a key to that room. We think that's very good, because then it's just the people who know how to handle the chemicals that can get hold of them.

The Cleaning Department

The cleaning staff in our school are very aware of the environment. The hole staff have for example been taking courses about how to take care of the environment. They are only using cleaning material that is harmless for the environment, except for chlorine. But it's used very seldom. Unfortunately the napkins that we have in our lavatories and in the class rooms are packed in too much unnecessary packing paper. Something that we would like them to change are the plastic bags in the trash-cans all over the school. We want them to start using paper bags instead .
