What About Our Names?

When we are babies our parents give us names, yes that’s the way it often works. But there is something special about names. A name is very important, people change both first- and surnames, new names keep popping up, some stranger then the one before. But is it right to change names and find out new names?

How you change your name
Many people wants to change their names. Is that right? In 2002 5613 people in Sweden wanted to change their names. And they can change both first- and surname if they wants to. It isn’t free, it costs about 1100 to 2200 Swedish crowns when you want to change. But you can’t just pick a name and pay, it takes three to five months till you can use your new name. And you can’t use any name you want, in Sweden we have rules that stop some names people try to change to, both first name and surnames. For example noble family names, famous artist names, like Britney Spears and names from literary productions.

There are many names you can chose from if you want to change your name.

Who change their names?

Everyone can change their names, some have special reasons like the immigrants. There are many immigrants in Sweden who change their names so they can get a job easier, because immigrants have a hard time to find a job, Swedes hire often Swedes rather than immigrants. Some people say it has become trendy to change the name to a new unusual name, because people won’t forget you and your new name

It’s wrong

I think it’s wrong that immigrants need to change their names but I can understand if they want to do it. But changing your first name because it’s trendy that’s definitely wrong. I think you should keep the name you got from your parents. I understand if people want to change their surnames. For example when you marry someone and both of you have two boring surnames, you can change to something new. This is what many people say when you ask them why they want to change their surname

Crazy names

New first name suggestions keeps coming, some of them very crazy. But why do we need to have so strange names? I think the ideas come for example from the celebrities who give their babies special names. People want their babies’ names to be different because they want to be noticed. I think it’s good that we have rules that stop some suggestions of names. Think about this, if a child gets a very special name, he or she probably will be teased. I don’t think a name is worth to be teased for. But this is my opinion, and everyone doesn’t think like me. People who want to be different, can change their name if they want to.
