Why do we have so many different opinions about abortion? Today there are much talk about the EU and the EMU, about working together towards the same goals. But about a big and important question like abortion is there no agreement on.


The law about free abortion in Sweden was introduced in 1975. The law mean that you can have an abortion until the 18th pregnancy week, whitout telling why you want to have the abortion. An abortion after the 18th week can only be made if there are certain reasons, for example if the pregnancy means danger for the mother´s life. It is the Swedish national board of health and welfare that decides if the abortion can be carried out. If the fetus can survive outside the uterus you are not allowed to make an abortion. The Swedish law says that complete human dignity is after the delivery. But this privilege about free abortion only covers a third of the world.

Risks with abortion

There are physical complications in almost 6% of the surgical abortions. There are also psychical complications more or less in almost every abortion. But the most common complication is when pregnancy rests are left inside the uterus. If you aren`t qualified to make an abortion, but make it anyway, you will be liable to pay a fine or go to jail.

Arguments for free abortion

* All children have the right to be wanted
* If you forbid abortion we get more illegal and dangerous abortions
* If the mothers life is in danger abortion has to be allowed
* Abortion has to be allowed after a rape
* The woman must have the right to decide over her own body

Arguments against abortion

* Abortion is murder
* Adoption is a better alternative to abortion, then somebody else can be happy taking care of a child instead of the fetus having to die
* Conducts to psychical and physical complications
* The ethics for the doctor disturbs, because the doctor´s task is to save life

My own commentary

I think that all countries should have free abortion because every woman has the right to decide over her own body. If the child risks to get an unsafe and unsure growth, it is for the child´s best to make an abortion.
