Capital punishment right or wrong?

Capital punishment (death penalty) has always existed in history. Nowadays there are many different opinions about death penalty. Some people think that death penalty is neccersary to deter crime. People who are against death penalty say that is has never been shown to deter crime more effectively than other punishments. However more and more countries abolish the death sentence.

10 October is the world-day against capital punishment. This day groups and individuals are gathering around the world to demonstrate against the capital punishment. Those people mean that capital punishment is the ultimate cruel inhuman and degrading punishment, and violates the right to life.

Capital Punishment has always existed

The capital punishment has always existed in history. For example Jesus was crucified over two thousand years ago.
Nowadays countries with capital punishment have reduced drastic. Half the world’s countries allow it. But this is changing slowly. More than three countries a year have abolished the capital punishment for all crimes in the past decade. Once abolished the capital punishment is seldom reintroduced.
In 2002, at least 1,500 people were executed in 31 countries and at least 300 were sentenced to death in 67 countries. China has death penalty for about 60 different crimes and executes about one thousand people every year. 81 percent of all executions in the world took place in China, Iran or the USA.

The Bible and the capital punishment

The Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament) said a great deal about the death penalty. The Torah (the first 5 books of the bible) required this punishment for many transgressions, both civil and religious. You can also read this in the Bible
*Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.
     * And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour; as he hath done, so shall it be done to him
If you read this text you can see that the Bible tolerates Capital punishment. Because it accepts the eye for an eye philosophy. But it also says that you shall not kill. So it´s very hard to understand if the Bible allows Capital Punishment or not.

My own opinion

I think death penalty is totally wrong. No one should have the right to kill another human not even the law. Everyone has their right to life. Instead of capital punishment they should get a long imprisonment.
I can only see disadvantages with the countries with death penalty. For example if a person has killed 2 persons in a land with death penalty he have nothing to lose on killing even more people because he know that he will probably be executed anyway. If the same thing happened in a land without capital punishment he can surrender and then come out of prison after about 20 years.
I find it even more wrong to execute teenagers because they have the whole life to get better and live a regular life. I think that every country should abolish capital punishment and the prison sentences should become longer at least in Sweden where a life sentence is about 15 years. Another argument against capital punishment is that it is irrevocable and can be inflicted on the
innocent people. Thats is very heavy argument against capital punishment because if someone is executed and then someone notice that the person was innocent you can never compensate him. If he instead was sentenced to lifetime they can release him and and give him an big sum of money as an compensation. I cant understand that a civilised country like USA can allow the death sentance. Should death penalty be allowed?
