In the region of Sara Zagora are found a lot of relicts from primitive tribes, some of which date from about seven thousand years ago. However, the history of the city is reckoned to begin in the late 7th century B.C. It was established as a Thracian city and its first name was Beroe. Late on, it has been renamed several times. The names were Augusta Trayana, Vereya, Irinopopolis, Boui, Eski Zaara, Zheleznik. In 1871 it was named Stara Zagora. Park “Ayazmo” It is a large park at the foot of the mountain Sredna Gora. Its creator is Metodiy Kusev- a bishop of Stara Zagora. The planting of trees wa s started in 1895 and nowadays the park includes within its borders 2600 decares of forest,which constitute extremely valuable forest and exotic species. In the park are located the church St.Todor Tiron; a monument of the bishop-creator and benefactor; a monument of Aleko Konstantinov (famous Bulgarian writer ) and a zoo. “The Eski Mosque” One of the oldest and most known monuments in Stara Zagora- The Eski Mosque. This is the oldest costruction saved from the arsons of our city. According to the legends and the historical facts it has been built during the 15th century and is the only monument saved after the arson in 1887. It has a square plan and four domes decorating the roof. Today it is declared to be a culture monument and is protected by the law. The Prehistoric Hamlet Another monument which dates from 6th century B.C. is one prehistoric hamlet , found in the yard of the United Hospital. Neolithic dwellings have been found there which are thought to be of the Stone Age. The houses have been left unexpectedly, probably because of approaching armies or warriors. There are one of the most preserved prehistoric dwellings in the whole Balkan-Danube region. The opera house of Stara Zagora Stara Zagora is a town with old music traditions dating from the mid-19th century with the establishment of church and secular choirs and the beginning of drama performances with musical accompaniment. The first-night performance in 1925 laid the foundation of the Stara Zagora opera house. Regardless of difficulties during the World War Two, the operahouse continued its activities. The new modern opera building (1971) provided all the conditions for stage aesthetics. Today, the Stara Zagora opera house has a rich repertoire featuring opera, operetta,and ballet performances.
