MONZA: A CITY FOR SPORT

 MONZA: A CITY FOR SPORT

Monza is right by Milan, the capital city of the region Lombardia. Many sport events are held in Monza.

One of the most important is the Formula 1 race. The race circuit is in the Park of Monza, the biggest closed park in Europe.

The race circuit was built at the end of February 1922 and was completed in just 110 days.

The first person to race on the track was Felice Nazzaro on a Fiat 570.

In the following years, the circuit was continuosly modified because many riders died during car and motorcycle races on its dangerous curves.

The most tragic episode took place during the 1961 Grand Prix during which 11 spectators died after being hit by the Ferrari driver by Von Trips, who also died.

The recent changes to the track (construction of the first chicane, and extension of the straight stretch) contributed making the Grand Prix of Monza faster and more exciting.

It’s particular shape makes this one of the most thrilling in the world.

Another important sport event is football, in fact Monza has a stadium which is also used for A series matches: it has 22,000 seats and the ground excellent for playing.

Even though the team is a local team it has always tried to reach the top of the classification.

During this season, after a difficult start, Monza was able to collect enough points thus reaching the play-off zone.

The indoor sport stadium was built right near the stadium and the finals of the Volley-ball tournament will be held there this summer.
