Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi fights for her country and it`s people. Burma, a country

of 47 million people is ruled by fear. A military machine of 400 000 soldiers

denies a whole nation its most basic rights. Burma`s human rights record has

been rated as one of the worst in the world after Algeria. Aung San Su Kyi

wants to bring: democracy, respect for human rights, reconciliation between

groups, nonviolence, and personal and collective discipline. Aung San Suu

Kyi is a symbol of heroic and peaceful resistance in the face of oppression.

She got her inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi and his commitment to nonviolence. She was only

two years old when he was assassinated, but she had made his life a center for her studies. Aung

San Suu Kyi is the daughter of the late Burmese nationalist leader, General Aung San.

National League for Democracy (NLD)

In August 1988 she became the leader of a burgeoring pro-democracy movement. The movement

grew into a political party that went on to win an owerwhelming majority 82% in national elections

in 1990, by which time she had already been in house arrest for a year. The people of Burma

overwhelmingly rejected military rule yet the military continues to refuse to transfer power to

Burma`s democratically elected leaders.

Aung San Suu Kyi is being held in detention by the military dictatorship in Myanmar (Burma).

Because she wants to bring freedom, justice and hope to the country Burma.

Aung San risks her own life to help Burma and it´s people.

The government want Aung San Suu Kyi to leave the country, but she refuses to do that. She stays

in Burma to fight for freedom.

Aung San Suu Kyi is a woman that despite the resistance she has to take she has the inner strenght

to get up an fight back.

Aung San Suu Kyi have made a huge impact on other peoples lives. Bono in U2 has dedicated a

song to Aung San, ”Walk On”.

A spirit too strong for any army

 The Nobel Prize for peace

She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1991. Her sons went to Oslo to accept the award

on her behalf because she was under house arrest. At the presentation, the chairman of the Nobel

Peace Prize committee, Francis Sejested called her ” An outstanding example of the power of the

powerless. Aung San Suu Kyi cannot be silenced because she speaks the truth”.

Positive despite the resistance

Aung San Suu Kyi is very positive of the future in Burma because the case of Burma has become

widely known because people outside Burma have cared enough. People all over the world have

opened their eyes for Aung San Suu Kyi.

I think that people are admired by this woman because she never gives up hope.

Aung San Suu Kyi wants to bring freedom, justice and hope to Burma and it`s people.

Aung San Suu Kyi is still under detention. She is separated from her family, despite efforts of many

governments and the United Nations to secure her liberation .
