Madrid- when terror is in Town

7.39, March 11 2004, Madrid, fire, smoke, screams, death. Once again a terror attack, this time in Madrid, the capital of Spain.

The attack has been called “the biggest terror attack in Europe in many years”.

What happened?

But what really happened that day? Well the short version is that a train exploded, and after that a second one blew up. The more detailed story is this: 07.35 at a train station (Atocha) somewhere in Madrid, everything was calm like it mostly is on a Thursday morning, businessmen getting to the trains, hoping to not be late, and children getting to their trains leaving for school, hoping to be late. They didn't see it coming, the silence before the bombs detonated, the screams afterwards, and the numbers of deaths the days after.

07.39 Everything began, the first train exploded, and then just 3 minutes later the second one was in flames. The two trains were supposed to leave at the same time, but the second train was 2 minutes late. If the two trains had left as they were suppose to, and been beside each others side, or even never left the train station, then a larger number of people would have been killed. 09.00, the police reported that over 30 people had been killed, and that the number was getting larger. Just 45min later, the police told them who was there that more then 60 people were killed. One scared woman told a reporter:
”There is bodyparts everywhere, and I think that it's going to be hard to identify them all, at least it's going to take a long time” Now we know that is was around 200 people who have been killed, and more than 1500 were injured. And as I was saying earlier, the number could have been larger.

The suspects are: al Qa'ida and ETA....

ETA: Funded in 1959, by a student organization that united nationalism and marxism. 1968 was the year that they committed their first murder, and today you could count the killings to 831 lives. Mostly military and policeman have been killed by ETA.

Al Qa'ida: It means base in Arabic. And that's sort of what it is, a base that inspires, finances, and trains terrorgroups all over the world. The organisation was created in Afghanistan in the middle of 1980, by a group of Arabs that had arrived there to fight the Soviet occupation force. One of the creators is Usama bin Ladin. The most “famous” attack they have made is the one against the twin towers in New York in 2001. That attack cost over 2000 people's lives.

Why could ETA be guilty?

* ETA has done this sort of thing before, there have been attacks around Spain before and those times ETA was the one to blame. And in February this year, the police stopped a truck with members from ETA, and in the truck there were 536kg of dynamite.

Why could Qa’ida be guilty?

The number of those who died in the attack is just their flavour. The more the better is sort of one of there role. One group called Abu Hafs al- Masiris Brigad took the blame for the attack in al Qa'idas name. But it's really hard to tell if the group is trustworthy enough to believe.

Why? And how could this happen?

One of the reasons could be that those who are guilty, wanted to create a European September 11. March 11, exactly two and a half year after the attack in New York against the twin towers. Coincident? Not likely, if you want to know what I think, then these are my thoughts: I think the whole thing was planned like this, to be on that exact date, two and a half year later, and I don't think a big and well known terror group is the guilty one. It could just be a small group who wanted to get a little bit attention in the already frightened world of ours. Everything about terror attacks most surely rings a bell for all of us, and we might start thinking about the two towers that the plains crashed into, and all of those who had to put their lives in for nothing.

Now you can't even be safe at home anymore. The terror attacks are spreading all over the world now. What can we do to survive, there's like no way out, no way back. All things were better before, that's what grownups tell us; maybe it's true? World war 3 is taking place in our life, it's not just the terror attacks, it's everything. People's minds are changing, all they want is to survive, they don't take the consequences of their acts, and it seems like they don't have to either. There's no one who can stop them (the terror groups) at this moment, they are too strong and powerful for us right now. But one day we can fight them, and that day, they will pay.......
