Why am I doing AS-Levels at school? This is the question I often ask myself at 1:00 a.m. when I’m sitting droopy- eyed at my desk still doing homework/ coursework/ revision! Especially when my friends who left school last year are ringing me to go up the pub or to a club. They are sick of hearing me say, “I can’t I have to do homework!” I’m sick of hearing myself say those words!
So why do I put myself through the stresses of AS-Levels, not to mention the constant ‘nuisance nagging’ from teachers and parents to do yet more work? The answer is the only thing that gets me through those dull study sessions: a brighter future at University! A future with a well- paying career and possibly a BMW nicely parked in my drive. A wardrobe packed with Chanel dresses and Gucci shoes would be a perfect bonus. But back in reality, that seems like a very distant future.
So here I am in the same situation I was in last night: stuck at my desk writing essays till my eyes refuse to stay open any longer. This is the ordeal most AS-Level students face every Monday- Friday. The days of a full- time social life are long gone. My nights in front of the T.V. are also pretty much extinct, as my parents don’t hesitate to remind me at every opportunity they can grab.
However, despite my constant moaning, life at Bishop Heber High School as an AS-Level student does have some bonuses! The 6th form social events are a chance for all AS and A-Level students to party and drink together till the early hours of the morning! You can guarantee that everyone has a bit of a hangover the next day at school! Some worse than others!
The 6th form common room also gives us a chance to sit together and laugh at the younger kids stood outside in the rain at break times. We get privileges above the younger years, such as going straight to the front of the dinner line and getting on the school bus first! Although these are only minor things, they do help to make life at the school more bearable and… fun! So although I do complain non- stop about school, I know that it will be worth- while in the long run. I would encourage every student to work hard and continue with his or her education! Are you thinking about your future!
