Athens 2004

In the summer of this year they were carried out in Greece, in Athens, the Olympic Games.

These Games have been characterized by the controversies for the delay in the construction of the sports facilities, by the cases of doping and above all by the fear of possible terrorist attacks.

But omitting these particulars, these Games had a great value for Italy if we consider  the number of medals gained: up to 32!!!

The Italian successes carried to the conquest of 10 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 11  bronze medals. The medals were won from the first day until the conclusion with the extraordinary victory of Stefano Baldini in the Marathon race (photo).

A high number of medals, up to 10, were won by the team games, as the gold in the volleyball in feminine field, the masculine silvers in the basket and volleyball, and the bronze in soccer. If on one side the team  got numerous triumphs, the athletes engaged in the swimming contest were disappointed, regarding the prevision, above all in the individual one.

A SILVER THAT WORTHS LIKE A GOLD

A positive balance for the basket team trained by Recalcati, second  place, silver that worths like gold, even if it remains a small sorrow for the final lost that it could be avoided as demonstrated by the victory on the Argentines in the fixtures of qualification.

These Olympic Games have carried to the unravelled of two great teams going to Greece like great favourites: the Serbia Montenegro which has concluded the tournament at the penultimate place

and the USA that have concluded with a bronze medal.

THE YOUNG ITALY

An optimal result in Athens 2004 has been caught up in soccer, in fact the team trained by Gentile got the third place. This result brought a great hope because it  was composed by very young boys, of which many veterans from the last European Under 21 carried out in Germany.

The team showed skill, spirit of group and enviable technical ability.
