European Citizens Challenging Education

Comenius 1 Project  

Concrete aims agreed at the conference held at Bishop Heber High School in Malpas, Cheshire, England, in November 2003 : 

Discussion among schools To develop the exchange of information that encourage active citizenship both in  global and local community.
Youth Talks To develop democratic strategies for  young people.
Youth discussion To investigate issues involved in teaching active citizenship in different European countries, developing the exchange of information about local and global citizenship.

Each school will develop, according what agreed, its own scheme of work.
The results, articles written by students, will be published, in one special section, on “ “Freeway” on-line school newspaper

Job steps

1 Step

The task, on any specific subjects, will begin  with the cognitive analysis about the structures and the specific matters according the topic proposed (Chart of human right; Children rights, European Constitution, School Delegated Decrees , Municipality, Job Centers etc.)

2 Step

Analysis and discussion on the documents collected, and after a due consideration on the knowledges acquired, focussing on specific problems  in each area take into account the ways young people can take part in the decisions related with each daily life

3 Step

Analysis of youth’s needs. This stage will produce subjects about different topics showing how young people face the different problems.
Students will prepare questionnaries to be used among their schoolmates  (stereotypes about the tolerance, opinions and proposals about the running of the democracy inside the school, opportunities for young people to take part in local institutions, proposals for the job centers).

4 Step

Writing of articles in English about the tasks carried out.

Results

Each class involved in the project will produce six articles (two for each topic). The students will form groups according their  specific preferences.

Timetable

The work will be carried out from December  2003 to May 2004.

Evaluation

The results of steps  3 and 4 will be evalueted inside the different school subjects.
