India has a long and eventful history that stretches about 4500 years
back in time.
Families in India differentiates a lot from families in Sweden.
Families with only parent and children is an exception in India, a family
can be ten, maybe twenty members and they all live under the same roof
with common economy. The women cook for everyone and the money earned
by the men is shared. The older men and women decide how the money is
spent, taking account of everyones needs.
In Sweden parents often lives with their children, and the closest relatives
are grandmother and grandfather.
In Hindu law, marriage is for life. Since the Hindu Marriage Act 1955,
marriages can be ended by divorce but traditional Hindus do not accept
the idea.
In Sweden one of three wants a divorce, and many children only live
with one of their parents and it´s not rare that you have step
siblings and step parents.
Arranged marriages are the most common for Hindus. They are arranged
by the elders in the family. The elders carefully consider the horoscopes
of the young people, and the social, financial and religious status
of both families. The elders also controls the sexual behaviour of its
members, including those who are married.
Love marriages are possible, but less common in Hindu society.
Abortion is legal in India if it is carried out in government clinics.
Five million abortions take place in India every year.
Abortion is legal in Sweden as well, and about 30.000 abortions take
place in Sweden every year.
Of course all Indian people dont live according to their religion,
and all Swedish people dont live according to christianity, which is
very important to have in mind.
