Christmas in Sweden

Christmas is a big tradition in Sweden. Christmas time is the biggest and moust popular tradition in Sweden. It lasts for over a month, and it begins with ”Advent” four weeks before Christmas Eve, 24 December, when we celibrate Christmas.

How Christmas was in the old days.
There was very much to do for the women who had to be at home and fix before Christmas. They had to cook, clean and take care of the children. The men where out in the forrest, on the farm or anyway else where they were needed. The women's task was to dip candles, and when they did that they had to be happy, so the candle would fire more beauiful. The food was importent here in Sweden. The women filled saugeages, made brawn and other food that had to be on the Swedish traditional Christmas tabel. They shold also brew beer and lay the ”lutfisk” in wet. The bread was made of rye flour or wheat flour, because that was the best for to baking. ”Lussekatten” was also a popular bread, and some say that it was a representation of the Heathen goddess Freja's cat. In the ”lussekatt” it's saffron, which was very hard to find. Chocolate was the moust popular candy for the children.A tradition was to hang the chocolate in the Christmas tree, and later plunder it. The men went out to the forrest to find a nice Christmas tree, which they later were going to cut and take home. That was not so easy as it sounds, when it was about 1 meter snow in the forrest to go through. The roads has also to be shoveld. They did it with a spade but mostly they used a snowplough after a horse. The pig had to be killed before 13 December, to have the traditional Christmas pig. Before the pig it was ”Pike” they had on the Christmas table. It's a fish, and all poor people had fish insted of pig. The word ”Julklappar” that represent the Engelish Christmas presents, is often associated with presents and gifts. But originally the meaning of the word was this: On Christmas Eve people ran from house to house and knocked on the door, pitched presents in, often with an ironic joke, and ran away. No one had to see that it was you who came with the present. It was from the beginning the Christmas goat who divided the presents. The Goat comes from a mean one with horn, the devil. Later Santa came and took care of the goat's task with the presents on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day the Swedish people got up very early to go to ”Julottan”, in the church. The journey was with sleigh and horse, with big fells, the sounds of bells, and torches. It was a very special moment to be at ”Julottan”.

How it is today at Christmas in Sweden.
Nowadays we more often buy our food for to the Christmas table. The pig that is the main course headfood instead of fish, is often bought today too. The main reason why we buy so many things , is because we have been all too comfortible, but also because the men and the women work full time today. It's not so much time left for other things. Christmas in Sweden has gone to far today. The Christmas presents have an other meaning than before. It's more of them, and a lot more expensive ones.A big piece of the social part you had with your family before, nearly doesn't exist anymore. The TV, DvD and video has taken that place. Here in Sweden it's a tradition on Christmas Eve to see ”Donald Duck” at three o'clock. It's one hour long and represent short parts of Disney movies. Sweden has not a special religion today, so it's not anymore many people who go to the ”julottan”. Many people think it is too early in the morning. So we can ask ourselves= Don't we have time to enjoy the time we celebrate the most?
