The graduation day
After many years of hard work, is it finally here. The Graduation! after that
very last day in school, a whole new life begins with work or maybe
even more studying. But how do we celebrate the graduation day in different
countries? This comparison just between Sweden and France is to save
you many hours of reading.
The Graduation. it's the day with the big
G. The day when we are finally free from many years of homework, trials
and early mornings. But how do different countries look at the day?
Here you'll get the answer:
In Sweden...
The graduation
day is a big day for all students in Sweden. You start in the morning
with the traditional ”champagne breakfast”. It consist of champagne
and strawberries that you eat with your classmates. One thing that is
quite unique for Sweden is that all pupils that have been at Upper Secondary
School for three years get their graduation. It doesn't matter if all
their grades are F. No trials have to be done to prove that they have
earned an education.
On the graduation day, the girls normally dress themselves in white.
the boys wear a handsome black suit. On their heads they have a special
hat, ”the student hat”, it is white and black. After getting their final
grades, tractors with trailers decorated with twigs of birch and balloons
are waiting for the the happy students. They get up on the trailer and
drive through the city so everyone can see and hear them. Later in the
afternoon there is a party at home with food and presents.
In France...
In France it's different. On the graduation day there are two tests
you have to do to prove that you have earned a graduation. One oral
test and one written test. If you fail in one of the tests, you don't
get your graduation diploma. Then you have to go one more year at the
school and hope for better luck that year. Since all students really
want their graduation, they are studying hard the entire last year.
They always feel the pressure of being the best from the teachers and
comparisons between pupils are not unusual. In their spare time,
most of the time goes toward homework. If they pass the tests on the
graduation day,the students go home to their families and hopefully
eat a tasty dinner. But there is no party.
Other facts...
In Sweden the pupils start Upper Secondary School the year they'll
turn 16 and graduate the year they turn 19. The school isn't so hard
and there's not so much homework (but that is of course very varying
between schools and programmes). The graduation day is always at the
beginning of June, and some days after or before the graduation day
there's a prom for all the students. It's a real prom with beautiful
dresses, hairstyles and suits. In France the pupils start Upper Secondary
School at 15 years old and graduate when they are 17 or 18. They choose
the programme they want to study at when they are 12 or 13. Their
graduation day is at the end of June or at the beginning of July.
The government in France has for many years tried to change the school
system, but every time the suggestion has been up, the teachers have
gone on strike.
Okay, so even though these two countries are quite near each other, the culture difference is very clear. The difference between these two countries are huge. But isn't that the thing that makes culture differences so exciting and fun to read about? We in Sweden think this day is a big day and do really celebrate it. But I'm sure that the French celebrate other occasions that they think are more important. © 2005 Freeway Writers: Caroline Klaar (sp07-09@park.se) . HTML by: Jimmy Söderberg (te06-56@park.se). |
