Cultural differences

When several years ago my bigger brother studied Spanish, I learned a word. His teacher had told him that this word was, may be, the most daily used one in Spain . The word was Maniana (tomorrow). It is said to fully capture the attitude of the Spanish people to work. Indeed I think it can be used to illustrate the slow pace in work as well as life, at which most of the people in my country live.

On the one hand it is not good to think you can postpone every work and do something more pleasant. If you have the chance to take a walk in the streets of any Bulgarian town, you will probably find something which is strange for you:” There is a café on almost every street!” And what is even more amazing, at anytime you can see people just sitting there, enjoying their drinks. By seeing all this you will be able to draw the conclusion that these people either don’t have work, or they don’t do it properly. Unfortunately to some extent you will be right.

On the other hand it is healthy to spend more time with a drink socializing with your friends. Because we are social creatures and if we don’t satisfy our social needs we become psychically ill. We all know how big the need for shrinks is in America . This is due to the fact that most of the people there don’t socialize enough, so they need a vent which they find in the “mental doctors”. On the contrary in countries like mine the shrinks don’t have work and do something else for a living. Another important reason for qualifying socializing in Bulgaria as positive is its ability to attract. It’s a specific feature of our country which makes a lot of foreigners to fall in love with the life in a small country like mine.

Finally, to dispute all doubt I will quote an American who ones said ”In America I was taught that time is money, but in Bulgaria I learned that time is life”. What do you think?
