Dog Eating

Relationships between humans and dogs are often characterized by strong emotional bonds. Consequently, dogs are popular as pets and companions, and are considered man’s best friends. However, in many parts of the world , but particularly in East Asia , dogs are raised and killed for food.

It is reported that countries where dog eating is common include China , North and South Korea , and the Philippines . It is also believed to occur less frequently in Vietnam, Cambodia, India and Thailand. Although t here are no figures available to indicate the number of animals affected by the trade in dog meat, millions are certainly killed each year in China and Korea alone.

Hopefully, action has already been taken by representatives of WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) who work for promoting the welfare of dogs and believe that the abusive practice of dog eating has to be prohibited by all means. WSPA investigators have visited numerous dog farms, slaughterhouses and dog meat markets and witnessed appalling levels of cruelty. After visiting Moran market in Korea , perhaps the most notorious dog eating country, Trevor Wheeler says: ‘ I watched in horror …. Moran market was described to me as the worst market in Korea for animals and for the dogs in particular. I found it difficult to argue with this. The howls that I could hear as the dogs were killed has remained a haunting memory ever since. ’ |
In my opinion we should respect culture differences but not in such cases as dog eating. I find it brutal and weird and therefore stand against it. After all, the dog has proved its high intelligence and shouldn’t be treated like this. |
