Now THAT’S Entertainment.

Ah yes, entertainment. The usual devices for entertaining ones-self in this modern age often involves some sort of electrical device, i.e. television, computer games, so called “gaming consoles” and the list goes on and on a bit more! However, a lot of entertainment these days does, in fact, commence without a plug socket in sight. Yes, that’s right: I believe that people today still have “imagination.”

Yeah yeah, alright, I know this is an extremely controversial view I hold, and I know I could end up with lengthy prison sentence, but I shall continue regardless. Just think about all the things you do in a day to stay entertained. For example, when thinking about what I could write this article about I was standing in the shower (entertainment in itself, quite frankly) making the water run off the ends of my little fingers, like tiny little water pistols. This added an entirely new dimension to personal hygiene, and it was exhilarating as a result. Another example includes the fast developing ping-pong tournament in the sixth form common room*! This started off with two people, a ping-pong ball and two coffee tables pushed together. They were just there, batting the ball to each other using their hands, (MAD! I hear you cry, but it really works!) blissfully unaware of the game that was about to ensue. Later on in the day this game progressed using one long table and paper folded up (in place of the usual net that is used in conventional table tennis.) The next day rolled around (I believe it was a Friday) and bats and a real table tennis net was introduced. I think that this is a perfect example of ingenuity and how people find means to keep boredom at bay! I have a firm belief that these young people are at the forefront of imagination and entertainment in the UK today. These amazing people are in fact keeping non-electronic entertainment alive! They deserve a medal, or at the very least recognition from the Prime Minister.

Alright, I may be going a bit too far there, but seriously just think about all the things you do in a day to keep yourself from falling asleep, whether it be playing with a pencil, or watching how many times that squirrel outside runs around a tree before burying its nuts (see the picture if unsure what a “squirrel” is), its all entertainment! Or how about drawing a face on your hand, with the gap between your thumb and your finger acting as the mouth! This serves to keep boredom far, far away for many hours for students, businessmen and doctors alike. There are probably a million things I could list here about random things to do to keep yourself occupied, but I shall leave it up to you to suggest a few ideas! Either what you have done or are planning for the future or maybe some ideas for fellow freewayers to attempt… however crazy. (So long as it doesn’t involve obvious stuff like “playing on Killer Master 3 on my Megatron-alon 4000.”)

*I wrote this article as the ping pong game was developing. However it has now been tragically and forcefully banned. Something about “ear damage” and a hospital visit… but it’s a long story and I don’t know about precise detail…
