Escape Reality

I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of paradise. That was said by Jorge Luis Borges, and I have to agree with him. From the day when I learned how to read (I was four and suddenly I started to read from the advertising signs beside the road) I have loved to read and now when I no longer have the time I really wish that paradise will be a library because if you don't have time in paradise when will you have time? And if it is a library I would like it to be the library in our city only with even more books.

The library is a big red building almost in the center of the city.
When you enter the library the first thing you will notice is the hig ceiling and the fact that it is made of glass letting the sun shine in which makes the whole entrance very luminous.
To the right you have the cafe and to the left the employment service, but I rather not think about that until I have graduated.
If you walk straight forward from the entrance you will come across a broad bridge over a deep hole.
Well it isn't that deep only a few meters actually, down under there is another floor usually occupied by different kinds of exhibitions.
When you reach the other side of the bridge you can choose to keep going straight forward, and end up in the harbour or turn right or left to get to the different sections of the real library. I won't let you choose and therfore we are going to the left, to the youth section of the library.
Not another teen book
If you love kids and everything about them, or you just have a kid inside you dying to get out, this is the right place for you. It is big, bright and lively. It is just as light as the entrence due to the many windows. There are a lot of shelves filled with books for young kids. And in the middle of the section there is a boat. Yes a real boat. The boat is where the kids usually play or just sit and read, but I guess there is more playing around than reading. In the corner of the library opposite the entrance there is a small room where the people on the library arrange things like theater shows for the kids or story readings. They are very popular among the kids and the library puts a lot of their money in projects for youngsters. Right before you leave the youth section you have the teenagers' corner, with a bit harder books and where the computers are, although they seldom work.

The big apple
After the youth section we are heading towards the adult part of the library.
The first thing that you will se when you enter is a big red apple, fake of course, it is hard to get an apple to be big enough to reach a mans waist and it'll eventually die if it is real.
To the right there is a corner with newspapers from every city in Sweden. But we are going deeper into the library and find out that it is a bit darker than the other parts of the building, perhaps it is because of the fact that shelves here are higher.
We also discover that there are more floors in this section if you walk upstairs you will find the factual study books.
There is a huge range of books and papers about genalogical research and the library actually won a prize for the best library of the year in that category a couple of years ago. This is where we run into a librarian with enough time to answer some questions.

Encounter with a librarian

  • This library was initiated in 1993 and is therefore 14 years old, the librarian Katarina Larsson tells us, and apparently they have 22 persons working there, but only 17 have a full time employment. They aren't only lending books they have a lot of movies, music and books on CD:s. All in all they have about 100 000 items of everything. And there's a huge demand for it to.
  • It is mostly guys who borrow books on CD, and they are probably the ones who doen't read much but enjoy the opportunity to listen to the books. Other than that they have been upgrading their activity online. So now there is a system for the customers to borrow books and music through the Internet a bit mor advertising is needed to get people to discover it. But they are still working on it.
  • We have to keep up with society and its progress. she finishes. And now we have to leave the library. The tour has reached its end and the library is closing for the day.
