Pancakes Vs Music…?

Ah. Where to start with “relationships”? Well you see, we all will have formed some kind of relationship with just about everybody we have any sort of contact on a day to day basis. This could be with that person who you have been friends with for years and are close to or even an incompetent college (not that I would mention names or anything but lets just say, hypothetically, she is called Mandy.) But let’s not turn this article into a rant about useless co-workers because I could go on for quite some time…

Anyway! Seeing as it was Pancake Day yesterday I think I will write about what different relationships exist, starting with a relationship with food. Enter the seemingly innocent and humble pancake… I’m sure I won’t be alone when I say that for many British people, stuffing your face with numerous amounts these delicious little devils we call pancakes is the result of a… Well I suppose kind of a one night stand which takes place once a year, where all sorts of things are dripped, drizzled and draped over them, usually delicious sweet things. This is largely down to tradition, where all the eggs, flour and milk are used up so people are not tempted to drink batter during lent. But why don’t people whip up a nice batter and have pancakes at other times of the year!? I often enjoy a scotch pancake at any time of day, season or weather, but then I suppose the Scottish variant differs from the traditional Shrove Tuesday pancake that many English people are used to, as they are smaller, fluffier and contain sugar. I myself can only think that the reason people don’t have the traditional pancake more often is because Shrove Tuesday is an occasion, an event if you will. Memories of flying batter going round the kitchen and oil burns are restricted to Shrove Tuesday for the sake of tradition, and therefore the pancake is also restricted to this day. I would say that this is a great shame, but it does make you enjoy what little time you have with the poor fellows, who only really get a mention on that fateful Tuesday in February. I suppose then that the relationship we have with pancakes is a close one, but tragically it is one that is enjoyed very infrequently.

I would link this paragraph to the last by saying that many relationships people have can be related to what relationship they have with a pancake. But as it happens I can’t really think of any relationships that are comparable to this… Well except maybe a child’s relationship with Father Christmas? Anyway seeing as I can’t link up this article very successfully I might as well go off on another tangent. One relationship that we probably have on a daily basis and just couldn’t live without, well I couldn’t anyway, has to be that of music. Personally I just couldn’t do without it. The first thing I do when I get in my car? Make sure there’s  music. When I get home? Music. When I'm getting ready to go out? Music. On a night out what do I want to be doing? Yep! Dancing to a good bit of music! Our relationship with music is therefore directly contrastable to that relationship we share with pancakes. One is a literally steamy affair that we enjoy once a year, and the other is a relationship that keeps us going every single day. Music wakes us up, accompanies us everywhere and when we are ill it makes sure that we are not alone in bed without a friend in the world…

Come to think of it I’m pretty sure I could live without pancakes, even though they are deliciously delightful. But try and take my music away and ill chase you away with a shovel.

Any relationships you couldn’t live without?
