the favourite italian food: pizza!!

Guess..what am I talking about? It’s easy to serve, easy to make, much more varied than the hamburger, it can be eaten with the hands: it is pizza!! Pizza is, in my opinion, the favourite Italians’food, it’s estimated that two Italians of five eat pizza on Saturday evening, also it is handy: it’s delivered to your front door or served in fancy restaurants. There are many kind of pizza: mozzarella, tomatoes and frankfurter are my favourite one. I like pizza also because I often eat it with my friends, for example, every Sunday evening, it is tradition among my friends eat pizza together in the square. It is a very healthy nutritious food too; in fact it is recommended by nutritionists, who see it as part of the Mediterranean diet.

There isn’t a precise moment when the pizza was invented, it gradually evolved over the years. The idea of using pieces of flat, round bread as plates came from the Greeks, they called them “plakuntos” and ate them with various simple toppings. The Romans called them “picea” and in the city of Naples (the pizza capital of the world), “picea” become “pizza” and people enjoyed eating them with more toppings like cheese, ham and tomato. In 1889, King Umberto I and Queen Margherita heard about pizza and invited pizza maker, Raffaele Esposito, to make it for them. He decided to make the pizza like the Italian flag, the Queen loved it and the pizza was named Pizza Margherita in her honour.

Curiosity

  1. According to the Guinness Book of Records the largest pizza ever made had a diameter of 37.4 metres and have been used 500 kilograms of flour, 800 kilograms of cheese and 900 kg of tomato sauce. The production of pizza was completed on 8 December 1990.
  2. In Italy there are about 20,000 pizzerias of which over 4,000 only in the province of Naples.
