You are my sister

When I hear the song ”You are my sister” by Antony & The Johnsons, I instantly think of the relationship between me and my sister.

”.....You are my sister and I love you
may all of your dreams come true
we felt so different over the years
the way we laugh the way we experience pain
so many memories but there's nothing left to gain from remembering
faces and worlds that no one else will ever know.....”

My sister and I are very alike. Sometimes we can even read each others minds, it seems. People used to think we looked like twins when we were younger. We probably did. Nowadays, not so much.

For a time, up to a few years ago, we were really good friends. Best friends even.
Now we can't stand the sight of each other. She's become the opposite person to who she used to be. She's become the opposite of me.
I've probably changed aswell, but not nearly as drastically as she has. It is as if she went to school one morning, and came home as a new person in the afternoon.
It scares me, but also amazes me that people can change so much in such a short period of time.
She's done and said so much that the sister I used to know wouldn't even dream about doing or saying.

I wonder, will she ever go back to being completely herself?
When a person has changed at a rapid pace and left all its characteristics along the road, can they be found again, or are they lost forever? I hope that some of them can be glued on to her personality and that she'll have some of her old qualities back.

If we weren't sisters by blood, we probably wouldn't still see each other.
Underneath the new person she's become, she's still the sister I used to know. At certain moments, when we talk about a memory or something from the past, just for that moment, she acts like the girl she used to be. And for that moment we forget that we're fighting and hating and just laugh. We forget that we're supposed to be enemies.

Will you ever really know the person you're in a relationship with?
