Cock-and-bull stories and puns

The world is full of papers and magazines, which overwhelm us with information. We see placards with big headlines daily, telling us about terrible accidents, the star's new boyfriend and some new shocks. But what is behind, in reality?

Often, the headline is like a play on words. The editor wants us to be interested and buy the paper in question. I've heard once of a gossip magazine. (I don't read them myself.) A big headline on the cover read that a famous Swedish singer was expecting. In the magazine there were a few lines about this star soon coming down with kittens.

The winner of this years “Let's dance”, which is a docu soap, once showed her underwear for a second when she was lifted up in the air by her dance partner. The following morning you could read on every placard of the “shock”. That was ridiculous. I saw it myself and it was definitely no shock. I mean, haven't they watched swimming competitions, or beachvolley, or athletics, or... This kind of making a mountain out of a molehill is not unusual in media.

Even worse, however, is that you can't always believe what the papers say. Stars can read about themselves, saying things they've never said, doing things they've never done and meeting people they've never seen. Sometimes, if it's serious, they sue the magazine in question.

I've heard about a winner of “Idol” here in Sweden. A paparazzo saw her at a café with a friend (in distance, I suppose). He simply thought it was another “Idol” star and wrote that they were a couple. This was, of course, not true. Because I haven't read this myself and I don't know this “Idol” winner personally so that I can ask her myself, I write this with reservation for incorrect facts, but I guess you get the point. I usually don't read gossip, but if I do, I'm aware of the fact that what's stated is not always the whole truth.

Don't believe everything you read in the papers.
