We're off. The plane has lifted and is now sailing above the clouds. I've tried to make myself comfortable in the not so comfortable seat and I've had a small chat with the lady next to me when; 'ding', the seatbelt sign goes off. In the seat in front of me a little touch screen catches my attention. It offers plenty of movies to watch, various games to play and a whole lot of music to listen to. I click the button 'Hollywood movies' and read through some of the plot summaries. After a time of shilly-shallying I finally decide to watch the film August Rush. Drama, love, feelings – yes, sounds like a perfect way to entertain myself for one hour or two.
![]() A while later I find myself sobbing. Totally astonished and amazed by this beautiful story about the magic of music and the mystery of love. I must look silly to the people around me, after all there are just moving pictures on a tiny screen, but here I am looking totally broken and obsessed by it. I can't explain why but somehow it has touched me so deeply. In some hours the plane will start descending and go down for landing, but I feel like I'll be swaying somewhere up high for a long, long time. I'm not surprised that the film industry is so big today. I'm not surprised that so much money is being spent on it. I'm not surprised that the way to hang out with friends nowadays on a Friday night is most often to watch a movie – even though it's not very social. No, I'm not surprised. It really is entertaining. But what is it about movies that is so capturing? What is it that makes my heart spin and my imagination to go wild?
![]() This is not the first time a movie has this effect on me. Sometimes every now and then a film grips me and takes hold of my heart. The fact is that sometimes even a bad movie, that other people find rather boring, inspires me and makes me dream, because I pick up the small things, for instance the personality of a character, a special scene, a funny line or a feeling. I guess movies have the ability to remove us from our sometimes so grey everyday life and take us into a dream world where there are no limits, no agendas and no distractions. And that's maybe why we find it so interesting and enjoyable too, because it gives our hearts enough space to fly.
