Green Day

This year on the 20th October we had our first Green day at our school. We took over this idea from our English partner school in Nantwich. They have it every year.
How did we organize it?
The lessons were held according to the normal timetable, but all the teachers had to deal with the topic environment in their respective classes. A lot of different ideas and activities came up: A small group of students (year 3, age 14) had learned poems by heart dealing with the environment or with nature in general and went to different classes to present them to their friends who were listening attentively. We found this very courageous of the students and thank them a lot for the great work they put into this. The final year students had prepared some potato stamps with different images on it like vegetables, plants and animals. The first year students used these stamps to print their own green postcards. They wrote a short text transmitting a “green message” to a good friend or relative. They had lots of fun with this and created nice work. In a maths lesson, for example, students calculated the water consumption or in a geography lesson they learned about trade winds and CO-2 emissions. Some classes went outside to have a closer look at plants and trees. The final year class even planted an apple tree in the school garden.
Beforehand a lot of students had put up stalls to offer healthy food. We had a variety of food that was offered: muesli, vegetables and fruit with dip, homemade apple juice, wholemeal bread and rolls, hot waffles and cakes. A lot of students responded very well to our first healthy breakfast at school.
For this special day we had invited our minister of the environment, Tanja Gönner, to present our project and our Eco-audit. She discussed environmental issues of our region with a group of advanced students.
Our local environmental officer also took part in the Green Day. He showed some scenes of the film “Oil crash” to classes of advanced students. He also talked about local projects to help save the environment.
On the same day we hosted an African theatre group of former street kids. They are from 17 to 30 years old and gave a performance in which they presented problematical issues of their daily life in Africa like violence, prostitution, drug addiction etc. The students were really impressed by their dances, songs and their theatrical performance. They wish to have them more often at school.
The takings of our Green day will help these kids to carry on with their work.
The green day was also the day to launch our film competition about CO-2 reduction and the work of student energy detectives. They will work on how energy can be saved in our daily life at school
All in all, we can say that the Green day was a good start into our Comenius project.
