Wind Energy

Wind has been used since ancient times for generating energy from nature.
In the history wind energy was used by ships for sailing or by mills for grinding grain. Today there are many wind turbines on earth which generate electricity by wind. A wind turbine has three blades and is about 100 metres high. That’s a picture of a wind turbine:

The wind makes the blades of the wind turbine move and this kinetic energy is turned into electricity by a generator in the wind turbine. There are areas on earth like the sea, where there is a lot of wind all over the year, so it’s more efficient to build many wind turbines in this area. Such a region with many wind turbines is called wind farm:

The countries which produced most electricity by wind energy of the world in 2008, are the USA, Germany, Spain and China. All countries produced together 120791 mw by wind energy in 2008.
Wind energy will be useful in the future, because it is alternative energy and wind will never end. But it’s very expensive to turn wind energy into electricity and to build new wind turbines. It’s efficient, because you can build many wind turbines in one area, where there is all over the year a lot of wind.
