Fair Trade products in Radolfzell

An increasing number of supermarkets and shops offer Fair Trade products. This is because they have realized that the producers aren’t able to make enough profit with the dumping prices.
The farmers for example only get 21 cents for a liter of milk, consequently most farmers can’t keep their farms.
In Radolfzell, there are many shops which have Fair Trade products in their line of goods, also the discounter Lidl.
They have products like coffee, milk, tea, orange juice, chocolate, sugar, rice and fruits, for example bananas from Ecuador. Sometimes the plantations are between one and 15 hectares big and there’s just one big family who is working there. Normally these people don’t get enough money for their work, but if they work together with Fair Trade, they get enough money for themselves. A special location for cultivation in Ecuador is in a little place called Las Palmas. There are 14 families who cultivate bananas.

After the plantation workers picked all the green bananas, the product is shipped from Ecuador to Europe. During this time the bananas become ripe and they get their typical color. Mostly the bananas arrive in Hamburg and are sent to the hypermarkets.

Lidl wants to enlarge its selection; however it depends on the demand. Some people buy Fair Trade products but lots of people don’t earn enough money to buy these products, because they are more expensive.
