Fairtrade at Barista

Barista Vision
Baristas Coffeeshops is the place where you can eat and at the same time contribute to a better human standard in the third world. The Barista franchise are the biggest multiple stores in Sweden that cooperate with Fairtrade, and the third biggest in the world. Their ambition is to be number one in the world concerning the ethic.

Trade -not aid
Barista started because they wanted to offer products with ethnic responsibility from employees who know a lot about the market. In 2001 the price of coffee reached its lowest level ever for export and that was not acceptable for the one´s who started up Barista. If they pay with more money directly to the coffee farmer they can build schools, health centrals and other sociality facilities by them selves. An Idea about self helping, Trade-not aid. To pay more in a premium will lead to that farmers can work with more ecological products. That's better for the environment and the consumer. At Barista they never want the ethical choose to be more expensive or has worse quality.

”The normal coffee farms is very sprayed with chemicals and after five years they give the first vintage. That vintage is only paid with a few SEK each kilo. If you still think that is okay you can keep visiting your regular café and drink your coffee. Otherwise you must change your behaviour and start visiting Barista for a coffee break.

Products
Which products can Barista offer to the costumer that are Fairtrade notice. 100% Fairtrade are coffee, tea, chocolate, sugar, honey, vanilla syrup and the exclusive Fairtrade cola, Ubuntu. All milk, juice, egg and jam is eco-labelled with the Swedish nationality sign KRAV-märkt. They try to only work with eco-labelled ingredients in all their cupcakes and other things they sell for eating. Barista work hard to get their products as much fair trade they can. It cost them double of the usual purchase price, when they buy fairtrade and eco-labelled products. That means it's much more difficult to have fair trade and eco-labelled products.

Friends
Barista is working with many companies to create a differens in the world. To find products which stands up to the demands they have, is a good dialogue with the purveyor a must. Friends in that area are Arla a dairy company, Ubuntu Cola, wholesaler as Sackeus and Svensk Cater and White Tiger a company producing fairtrade energizer.

Also a serious cooperation with people working on the field in the third world as a must. Barista is working with a several operations about human standard. First is Fairtrade and also a cooperation with Swedish UN-association.

Many companies working with fairtrade but forget about them selves. What they can do when they working or can the place they work change for a better environment? Barista has also thought about that, all the coffeshops have an electricity company using renewable sources of energy. The interior design must be made at a ecological way and the design of it support smaller designers.

Visitors
The coffeeshops are strategically placed at the best market spots and directly turned to youths and students. Of course are other visitors also welcome for a coffee break and spend their money.
The basic idea is that any one can buy something to eat and at the same time help the producer behind it.
