Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield were the two guys who started the company Ben and Jerry´s homemade Inc. They began to produce and sell ice cream in a rebuild gas station in Burlington, Vermont 1978. They only used fresh milk and whipped cream from the cows in the neighbourhood. They ran the company both for money and for fun. Like Jerry said:"If it´s not fun, why do it?"

Now when the company is much bigger they don´t take the groceries from the cows in the neighbourhood, but they still have natural groceries. In their fair trade marked ice creams they have fair trade groceries. For example, they take sugar from Paraguay, toffee crunch from Dominican Republic and vanilla from India.

There are a lot of flavours to choose from but only three of them are Fairtrade labelled in the collection. These are Vanilla Toffee Chrunch, Chunky monkey and a new flavour for 2009, Chocolate Macadamia. That´s because there is a limited edition of commodities. That´s a thing that we think should be changed! Because the working conditions are horrible for both children and adults.

In many countries people are working for a salary that is long below minimum. Children are forced to work from a low age so that the family can have food on the table. Often the parents sell their children for money and the children have to work off the debt all by themselves. Because of the long days without rest, the children sometimes fall asleep at work and then the ”owners” increase the debt with a couple of years.

Besides the horrible working conditions it´s not unusual that the children are raped and battered. We think that is awful! But we can help some of the children by buying groceries that are marked with Fairtrade logo. Fairtrade ensures that everyone who works with a particular product is going to get a fair salary and a fair and secure working condition.

The three Fairtrade flavors.
