Winter fishing (when you drill a hole in the ice).

Here in north of Sweden we like to go out and feel the nature. To do that we can for exemple go out on the ice and fish some perch, trout, char, or whitefish that we later make a delicous dinner of. In this artical we are going to describe how we do!

Jig fishing or ice fishing as it also is called is nearly the same as usual fishing. But you do your fishing on the ice with a jig twig. The ice lure is the traditional lure, but there is also another lure called balance lure and it just walks through the water. The most used lure is a hook that sits on a snood. On the hook you put a worm or something else. It doesnīt matter what you put on the hook, itīs the shine of the lure that makes the fish react, and then the fish eat the worm that both smells and tastes good.

The supply of jiggs in different models and of different products is very big, and most of them are working very well. Each fisher usually finds his own favorit jig which works well. Itīs better to have only a couple of jiggs but of different sizes. The size and the weight of the jig is very important if you want to have a good result of your fishing, but the look of the jig isnīt so important. If you have a lot of jiggs to use you can have some difficulties to learn how to use them. But if you have 2 or 3 jiggs you can easier learn how to use them. Since the twigs are in different shapes you must learn how to control the different twigs in different ways. The big possibilities to variation the fishing has to offer is something you have to preserve.

The Twig

If you are going to do jigfishing you will of course need a jig twig. There are many different sorts of jig twigs and you have to choose the twigs after what sort of fish you want to pull out of the hole. The twig should be well balanced and fit well in the hand. It should also be equipped with a spool so that you easily can adapt the line length to the fish depth. The spool also makes it possible for you to give out the line to the rushing fish. It would even be better if you had some sort of brake or barrier on the spool, so that you easier can stop the line from rushing out of the spool. A twig with a stiff peak is to prefere in most cases. A stiff peak gives you a more distinct contact to the bait so that the hook really sticks to the fish. The line should be pretty hard so that it doesnīt go snap so easily. The colour of the line should be pretty light ( It canīt be transparent) so that you can see it in the dark drill-hole. When the fish has hooked on to the hook you put your twig at the side and pull the fish up with your hands.

How to dress and what to bring

When you go out fishing you need something to sit on, like a rucksack with a folding chair. Because in the long run it can be pretty tough to stand for hours. It is also easier to make contact to the lure which makes it easier to react when the fish bite on the hook. If you want to have alot of fun you must not forget to dress warmly. Dress layer on layer, if you do that it keeps you warm and dry. You can also put on some clothing that the wind canīt blow through. You also need something to eat, you should not forget some hot chocolate to warm you with. An ice drill is a brilliant thing to bring, but if you are lucky there already is a hole on the spot where you want to fish. To take away the ice slush that can be in the drill hole you need an icescoop. With that you easily can take away the iceslush. DONīT forget ice-prods and a life-line.!

How to eat the fish

When you have catch the fish, you can make a delicous dinner of it. If you have catch a perch you can put foil around the perch. But dont forget to spice the fish with the spices you think fits your taste. When the fire, that you of course has lighten during your fishing has burnt out you put the fish on the live coal. Then you let the fish lay on the live coal for a wile. After a couple of minutes the fish is ready to eat.You got a delicous fish dinner, that you can eat when you are out in the wilderness.

Have you heard this?

Did you hear about the guy that went ice fishing on his day off? He took his fishing tackle and axe out on the ice and picked a spot. Grabbing the heavy axe, he took a big swing. At the moment of contact with the ice the man heard a voice from above. "There are no fish under the ice"! The man tought the wind was playing tricks and paid no attention. Again, he took another swing of the axe and again the voice above said, " There are no fish under the ice"! This time the guy was sure he heard the mysterious voice and looked up and inquired, " God, is it you, God? And the voice said, " No, itīs the rink manager!" Ha hahaha!!
