![]() Di Bella's Therapy... A new therapy against cancer has been implemented by the Italian medical doctor Professor di Bella in the last decades. The M.D.B. (Multitherapy di Bella) is based on a cocktail of different medicines, among which somatostatin plays a mayor role. When the professor officially presented his therapy, the Ministry of Public Health, in the person of Ms. Rosi Bindi, claimed for the presentation of any medical track records regarding people who had been successfully treated with this method. At this point the iter dramatically collapsed. Doctor di Bella feared the boycopting of his long life studies. Instead of a collaboration within the scientific world, the confrontation has turned into a battle among the Big Powers of Medicine: pharmaceutical companies, oncologists, baron of the scientific research Politicians and the common people. Under the pressure of desperate people, Magistracy has authorized the therapy for all the patients who voluntary would have accepted to receive it. At the same time there has been the request to the Government Medical System for a free supply of the main medicine, the somatostatin. A number of questions have been arisen:
Among others there have been additional problems as well as the shortage of somatostatin on the market and its immediate impact on the price. The cost of the teraphy on the base of the subsidized price amounted to 1,8 millions per months. Thorough the involvement of same pharmaceutical Italians companies, the cost has been reduce to about 700.000 a month. Amid all kinds of demonstrations and polemics, the official testing has started up. It is being carried on in 21 centers all over the country; the patients directly involved will be 600, plus another 2000 who will be treated with the same medicines and closely monitored. The famous oncologist Umberto Veronesi has been appointed Co-president of the Official Commission set up by the Ministry of Public Health for the testing of the entire method. The results of this processes could be reaponably expected in a different time frame: in abort two month for pulmonary and intestinal cancers, while other cancers will require a longer testing process.
