Young people´s kind of music

We can hear it practically everywhere… On the radio when we wake up, on the bus on our way to school ,in the shops, in the streets, even in our own heads!! It is everywhere: Music...
There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of different music styles. Here is just a few examples: pop, hip hop, ballads, punk, classic, folklore, synth, disco, reagge, grunge, rock n´roll, heavy methal, and so on. Streams of tones, put together in different ways, creating different melodies and styles surround us almost all the time. For some people, music represents a whole lifestyle, like punk that was first known in England in the 70´s. And in the 80´s, there was practically war between people who listened to rock and the ones who preferred synth. We think music is a very hard thing to describe. It can mean so much! It can be your goodnight song, your therapy, your wedding march or just a way to relax after a hard day. Most of us listen to it everyday, and I don´t think my classmates are an exception. Here comes an introduction to what kind of music young people listen to here in Sweden, every day!

Our kind of music!
We asked all our classmates what their favourite music was, and it resulted in a lot of different artists and styles. Rebecka for example said she liked practically all music, especially Celine Dion, who was one of Ida´s, Sara´s, Maria´s, and Linda´s favourite artists too. William was into rave and grunge, and his favourite artists was Hole and Prodigy. Hampus said he liked to listen to hip hop and rap, like Rage Against The Machine. Metallica was also popular, at least that´s what Peter, Therese, Anna, Ida, and Maria thought. Maria also said she was a fan of the swedish group "The Cardigans" Other favourites were Garbage, REM, Nirvana, Mariah Carey and Pearl Jam. Different music groups, different styles... We are all different people! But, today, the swedish group "The Cardigans is really "hot stuff" with their new album "Gran Turisimo"

THE CARDIGANS
Mix pop and jazz with a distinctive 60´s feeling and you get "The Cardigans" who have created a unique style. The famous band is known all over the world. The Cardigans is one of the most popular bands in Sweden for the moment and they are pretty big in Japan and the USA too.
The band was formed in Jönköping in 1992 and it consists of Nina Persson (21) who handles lead vocals, and she hates prejudice against Swedish girls. The song Celia Inside is all about Magnus Svensson (23) - who plays the bass- old girlfriend. Bengt Lagerberg (22) plays the drums and the flutes, Lasse Johansson (22) plays the guitar and the keyboard and he is also the Don Juan of the band, and finally Peter Svensson (21) who plays the guitar and writes the tunes. Peter loves hardrock. The Cardigans think it´s a pleasure to listen to Primal Scream and Pantera. They writes the lyrics together and they have released four albums now; Emmerdale, Life, First band on the moon and the brilliant new Gran Turismo.

BURNED OUT OR JUST TIRED....?
Last summer The Cardigans said good-bye after one tour with 130 concerts. They sang the songs from the album First band on the moon. One of the songs was Lovefool which was a big hit and the leading song in the film Romeo & Julia. The members of the band said :
- We are not burned out but tired. Its not easy to change places often and meet new people every day. Maybe you can learn to handle it better after a while but it´s only a few persons who really learn to live with it. Its not strange if you´re a bit tired after tour of several weeks.

NEW ALBUM
The Cardigans has now released a new album called Gran Turismo and the first single that is released is called My favourite game. The Swede Jonas Åkerlund who have made the video Ray of light with Madonna and Smack my bitch up with Prodigy have now also made The Cardigans video My favourite game. The unusual video have four different ends.

ON TOUR
The month before Christmas the Cardigans will go for a PR-tour around the world. This autumn they have only done some live-concerts in England and they are going for a real tour in 1999 with their new album. So just wait, soon they are standing in front of you, screaming:
-We are The Cardigans and we are just here to entertain you.
That would be something for Maria in SP2a at Parkskolan
