Sweets have always been very much appreciated even in the stone age. Many of us today eat a lot of candy. Fortunately our school cafeteria has a lot of candy to sell.

Favourite candy today
We have asked our class mates about their favourite candies

During one year a normal person eats 11,6 kilo candy and those who are most dying for candy eat about 70 kilos a year.

We asked in the cafeteria in our school which candy sells best and it is lollipops.

Candy exhibition
We have a candy exhibition in the museum here in Örnsköldsvik. It shows you a little about the history of candy. They have a chocolate box from 1931 and every chocolate bit is still there. It is the oldest and the most famous chocolate box here in Sweden. They have also very beautiful tins in which they had the candy before. And the first real candy was sold at the pharmacy.

Swedish candy producers
Sweden has a lot of candy producers. Here are some of them.

"Karamell Kungen"
Started in 1985 Since "Karamell Kungen" is included in Fazer the Nordic countries' third biggest candy producer. You can find "Karamell Kungen" in other countries than Sweden. You can find it in Finland, Norway, Denmark and England. The name outside Sweden is Candy King.

Karamellpojkarna
Is a company in Alingsås a city in Sweden. In 1952 the factory Suchard closed but was started up again by three Suchard workers was given the name Karamellbolaget Peterson & Co. After a few years they could employ some of their old workmates. It became a joint-stock and then they got the name Alingsås Karamell AB. In 1992 the production moved to a new built building outside of Alingsås and the name of the company was changed to Karamellpojkarna AB.

Cloetta
Started in Copenhagen in 1862 by the Swiss brothers Cloetta. In 1873 a factory started in Malmö and to Ljungsbro the business came in 1900. One of their most famous candy is Plopp, a piece of chocolate. Plopp has become 50 years this year. In 1949 Plopp left the candy master Thule's factory on Kungsholmen in Stockholm. Today Thule doesn't make this candy anymore, it is Cloetta. They celebrated the 50th anniversary with giving out a sister - Plopp with a taste of liquorice. The typical buyer is a woman between 15 and 30 years old.

"Polkagrisar"
"Polkagrisar" from Gränna ( a small Swedish town) is one of the most popular Swedish candies and souvenirs. It started already in 1859 when the widow Amalia Eriksson applied for allowance to make "Polkagrisar". Is has never come up where she got the prescription from. But where came the red and white striped pole from? Maybe it has with the dance the Polka to do since they reached us approximately at the same time. In the middle of the 19th century a sweet was called pig. The ingredients in a "Polkagris" is sugar, water, vinegar and real peppermint oil In the 1970's they started to make other tastes for example violet, salt and pear. The most popular tastes besides the "Real Polkagris" is Salt liquorice, cream cola, violet, tutti-frutti and wild strawberry.

The stone age tradition
The stone age people's candies were nuts, dried fruits and berries, sweetened fruit and honey from bees. Later people had fresh spruce sprouts and resin as bubble gum.
