Örnsköldsvik

Örnsköldsvik is a little town in the north of Sweden. It´s a town since 1894 and now about 58 000 people live there.

This is a little text about the history of Örnsköldsvik. The name of the town originates from county governor Per Abraham Örnsköld (1762-1769). Ö-vik became a city in 1894. It is now mostly the fermented Baltic herring which is "exported" to the rest of Sweden. That's a food that is eaten mostly here in the north of Sweden. The forestry industries have a long and successful tradition in Örnsköldsvik and MoDo is the biggest of the forestry industries. Örnsköldsvik is a sporting city, where ski jumping and ice hockey are big sports. About 58,000 people live in Örnsköldsvik.

MoDo is the largest company in Örnsköldsvik. It makes paper and pulp, which is exported to the rest of the world. Many of the people in Örnsköldsvik work there. MoDo is one of Europe's top forest industry companies and one of Sweden's biggest exporters. MoDo makes and sells newsprint and magazine paper, paperboard, sawn timber and pulp.

Here are some years from the history of Örnsköldsviks and things that have happened:

1930 two big industries were founded: Hägglunds och Söner and Mo-Domsjö. Now people got decent         jobs and the city good growth.
1940 after World War 2 Örnsköldsvik started a growth program and it ended successfully with 4000         people settling down.
1950 a new fire station was built.
1960 an airport was built and also a new purifying plant.
1970 a new sports centre with a swimmingpool was opened.
1980 a new city hall was built.
1990 Arken was built and a new swimmingpool and a big adventurebath.

The MoDo Hockey A team plays in the elite league and right now they lead the league. MoDo is a club since 1921 and has been in the highest league for over 40 years. Many stars like Peter Forsberg and Markus Näslund have played there since their youth. The home arena of MoDo is Kempehallen and it takes about six thousand people. The spectators come in crowds to Kempehallen in the winter to see MoDo Hockey and they´ve done that in many centuries.
