Good relations?Even though British meat is the safest it has ever been and possibly the safest in the world, there are still people refusing to eat it. Namely the French. Not that we British have anything against the French. Or do we? The British public has taken it to heart that they are being persecuted by the French. They obviously do not realise that there are a grand total of forty-seven other countries, including the United States, who are also boycotting British meat! Given this information it seems that either the British are being misinformed somewhere along the line of communication, or they have a passionate dislike of the French. To quote from the nineteenth-century French historian Jules Michelet "the war of wars, the combat of combats, is between France and England: everything else is just an episode". So even in the nineteenth-century people had noticed this strange relationship between France and England! Many people have begun to boycott imports from France, will they boycott the produce of the other forty-seven countries? Without this trade countries would become isolated and ignored, are the British going to let this happen over one dispute? Being British myself I can not condone the actions of France and the other forty-seven countries, but I can say that the anti-French propaganda has to stop! I myself supported the campaign until I discovered that so many countries were in agreement with the French decision. If we boycott the produce of all the countries who refuse to import our meat we will be back in the same situation which we endured in the World Wars! I can not see how anyone would chose to return to wartime lacking for a dispute over meat. There is, however, the possition of British farmers to consider. Without being able to export British meat these farmers would surely lose their livelihoods and all they have worked for. These farmers who stand as the backbone of our country, who keep trade lines open and who produce an enormous percentage of meat for export aswell as to remain in our country. How can we let these people down without a fight? We must strive to maintain our rights to export what is now fine quality produce. We must fight to keep good relations with the countries with which we trade so as to continue into a prosperous future for all concerned parties. If we must fight, why have we picked on the French? Why are we not calling for emergency negotiations with the other forty-seven involved countries? The answer is simple; without France the British can export and import with many other countries, but without the help of the United States, Britain would be an isolated country with whom few countries would wish to trade. We would have to do without tea from Brazil, bannanas from Jamaica, technical goods from Japan and Taiwan, need I continue? © 1999 Freeway Writer: Charlotte Morrall.
