Netball
Netball is an exciting and extremely fun sport to play. To play it you need Severn players
who each play a different position, these positions include:
- Goal Keeper GK
- Goal Defence GD
- Wing Defence WD
- Centre C
- Wing Attack WA
- Goal Attack GA
- Goal Shooter GS
These positions are split into defence and attack, the GK,GD and WD are the teams defence,
their job is to stop opposite team from getting a goal. The WA,GA and GS are responsible for
scoring goals, they are therefore the teams attack. The C position is involved in both the attack
and defence system for the team.
The court is split up into three sections, the centre third and two goal thirds the lines that
split the court into the thirds are called Transverse lines. The object of the game is to score
more goals than the opposition , this can be done by shooting the ball into the opponents goal
post. The only people who can shoot are the GA and the GS, but first you must get the ball to your
shooters . To get the ball down the court you have to pass the ball between the team players but
you can not bounce the ball. To do this you have a number of different passes :
- Bounce pass - Pass the ball by bouncing it to another player
- Overhead pass - Using one arm the ball is passed above the players heads
- Chest pass - Using two hands the ball is passed from the chest to another player
Once you are in possession of the ball you must pass it to another player within three seconds,
but you need to find another player to pass to. Your team members must get into space in order to
get away from their opponent,
This can be done by running away from your opponent or quickly moving and therefor deceiving your
opponent. The game is a none contact sport so penalties can be given if contact occurs. To stop a
player running with the ball a player must only do two steps this is called footwork once you have
taken your two steps you can pivot this Is when you can not move your landing foot but you can move
your second foot to move around in different directions. If you take more than two steps the umpire
can stop the game and give the ball to the other team.
The game starts off with a centre pass which is taken by the centre ,the rest of the team must get
into position and wait until the umpire blows his/hers whistle. When a goal has been scored the
centre goes back to the centre of the court and takes the pass, each team will alternate in taking
the centre pass.
