How will you celebrate the new millennium?

Staffan Hagström 58, Social Science Teacher

- I will celebrate the millennium in the cottage on Ulvön, with my wife, our youngest daughter and her boyfriend. I’m going to reflect over different things. Maybe I’m going to fire some rockets but that’s not for sure. I have no special hopes for the new millennium except getting more fish than last summer. Laughing...

Therese Frisk 18, Social Science Student

- I will celebrate the new year with my boyfriend, Andreas. I will be in Sweden but I don’t know where. I think this new year will be nicer than the earlier years. I bought a dress last August, that I will wear in the new millennium.

Pernilla Genlund 17, Media Student

- I’m going to celebrate the new year in the mountains in Dikanäs. I will have my boyfriend and my friends with me there. I think it will be funnier than the earlier years.

Elisabeth Lundin 50, Employee in the school cafeteria

- I’m going to work at a party in Jönköping with my husband, on New Year’s Eve. I’ll only wear black clothes because I’m going to serve at table, but I really don’t fit in black colours. At midnight I’ll put on a coloured scarf. I think that many old technical things are going to stop and I’ll never sit in an airplane or on a train during the new millennium! I also think that a lot of youth will be disappointed this 2000 celebration.

What is going on in our little town when we take the first step into the year of 2000? Do you also think the world will come to an end when we’re doing the African dance...

"RAKET..."

Our countdown began on the 24th of September, 99 days before the new millennium with something we called '99 night. In connection to this night a "Budkavle"(a paper roll which is transported by a wagon) was sent on its way to visit 30 districts to connect the community together.
Our "Budkavle" contains a message from Örnsköldsvik’s councillor of the municipality, Elvy Söderström. In every district a "Budkavle ceremony" is taking place with the wagon as stage and the message is read. A gift should be given to the "Budkavle" from each district.

In Örnsköldvik’s city a countdown celebration is taking place at noon every day. There are different schools and organisations which arrange programmes of their own on a stage in the middle of the square.

The 24th of October, the United Nations Day, we went down to the square to look at some students from our school who were supposed to perform that day.

It all started at noon with a trumpet flourish which was played by a man called Sören Kvist. The host for that day was Jessica Eriksson, a student from Parkskolan. She began with reading two millennium texts. One of the texts was written by Bo R Holmberg, a famous Swedish writer living in Örnsköldsvik. He has written one text for each day where "Life" is the main thread.
Then a song about Örnsköldsvik was played. After that some children from a primary school, called Mycklingskolan, were dancing and singing. They sang songs about children from other countries.

When the children had finished their performance, Anders Berglund, an ex-chairman in Örnsköldsvik’s United Nation Organisation talked for a while. Later the students from our school had their performance. They danced an African dance and a boy from the Music school accompanied them on African drums.

It was a nice entertainment and a big audience, but the weather could have been better...

The group from our school which were dancing in the square had also a performance on Parkskolan’s "Open Day." It’s a day when we are going to school on a Saturday to show our families and relatives how Parkskolan works. Pupils who are leaving the ninth class will also get a chance to see Parkskolan and our different classes. We have lessons as usual the whole day, but later we are free one school day.
Our Open Day ’99 was quite fun. A first we had a language lesson and then we worked with Freeway in a computer room. After that we were supposed to have Maths, but we had no classroom so we went home…
There were lots of people and many students had a lot of activities.

How are you spending the days before the new millennium?
